The ’Terrapin Trees’ Green Initiative is part of Terrapin’s carbon offsetting programme and reflects our commitment to good environmental practice throughout our business operations. Terrapin’s market-leading off site solutions for a wide range of building needs are already among the greenest available - and our tree planting initiative makes for even more environment friendly project solutions.
Terrapin Managing Director says Terrapin endorses the Tree Appeal organisation’s view that planting trees makes a very real contribution to the environment. “We’ve proved that we’re ‘carbon-less’, producing energy efficient building systems in a minimum waste, minimum carbon process specifically designed for streamlining construction on site. And we make far fewer deliveries to site than traditional building methods. This new tree planting initiative will totally offset the carbon produced by the deliveries we do make”, he says.
Terrapin gives customers three choices for planting the trees. We calculate how many trees are needed and then we either plant the trees on your site, or on a site that you nominate such as a local school. Alternatively, well get Tree Appeal to plant your trees at one of their sites across the UK.
Terrapin is constantly striving towards the ultimate goal of zero carbon building and a part of that aim includes a pledge to provide 100 free trees for schools. Plantings are underway at primary schools in Milton Keynes, where Terrapin has been based for over 50 years. This project of 100 trees is calculated to offset all carbon emissions from Terrapins recent delivery vehicle movements.
The first school to benefit from the scheme is Heronsgate, a local primary school serving the Walnut Tree Community. Five oak, five ash and five hornbeam saplings, courtesy of Terrapin, were planted by pupils in a recreational area at the school on Friday 5th March 2010. Trees are being supplied in partnership with the Tree Appeals ’Trees for Schools’ programme, which encourages schools to plant trees in their grounds to create woodland habitat, bio-diversity and provide a valuable learning resource.
“When Terrapin launched the free tree offer it generated considerable interest,” says Terrapin Managing Director, We got a great response and processed applications on a first come first served basis. Saplings are now being delivered to the seven lucky schools which were among the first to apply and satisfied the qualifying criteria he comments. In addition to Heronsgate, the selected schools are Long Meadow, Merebrook, Middleton, Orchard, Pepper Hill and Two Mile Ash.
The Countryside Management team at Milton Keynes Borough Council has provided invaluable support for the ’Terrapin Trees’ project, including conducting site surveys to assess the suitability of proposed planting sites for the variety of large and smaller species of tree on offer, ranging from ash and oak to cherry and crab apple.
