Pre-school Learning Alliance, North Nottinghamshire

Terrapin has been involved in many schemes under the Government's Sure Start initiative, notably for the Pre-School Learning Alliance in North Nottinghamshire.

Terrapin worked closely with David Vickery, Architect, of Vickery Leitch, who was commissioned to design the facility. The end result is a single storey pitched roof building with 311 sq m floor area providing a unique service, being a mini Sure Start Centre and also a full daycare nursery with 30 places.

Multiple activities are organised for families within the local community and the centre also provides advice on healthcare. Working with the local Primary Care Trust, the centre has a Health Visitor and a Midwife in attendance one day a week.

The building was constructed in a tight site, to a programme of just 20 weeks. Internally, the client specified a special glass partitioning system and requested part of the pitched roof in the reception area to be exposed to create a more spacious ambience. Other requirements included a maze of low partitioning to amuse the children.
