Norfolk County Council, being committed to the Government’s objectives of encouraging more sport among young people, identified the need for three new sports halls in and around Norwich.
The Council works in partnership with NPS Property Consultants Ltd and instructed them to identify the most cost effective and best value solution to their needs. Research revealed Design & Build as a favourable option and a number of companies were approached for base line costs. Terrapin, having been highly recommended, provided the best value for money.
Two of the sports halls are sited at secondary schools; Framingham Earl High School and Aylsham High School. The third is a shared facility between Heigham Park First, Avenue Middle and Parkside schools. The site of the sports hall is the school playing field of Heigham Park First School off Recreation Road and is to be called Recreation Road Sports Hall.
Framingham Earl High School has Specialist School Sports College status and it is important for them to offer a suitable sports facility to continue their established track record. The building has a floor area of 1,269 sq m, and along with the main hall, a secondary multi-purpose hall and teaching spaces are included to maintain the school’s commitment to sport.
The sports hall at Aylsham High School is slightly smaller with a floor area of 1,002 sq m. The school has been waiting for the facility for many years and are looking forward to offering a wide range of activities, believing that physical education and sport play major roles in the success of the school.
The third facility, Recreation Road Sports Centre, has a total floor area of 612 sq m, and as with the other two, has been designed to meet the stringent requirements of both Sport England and the Government’s New Opportunities Fund. The building provides sport facilities for a number of schools, including children with special needs. With single storey accommodation; fully accessible changing rooms and inclusive ancillary spaces, the building will allow sporting activity to be carried out throughout the year for all types of users.
