Terrapin Education

Hardenhuish Comprehensive

Terrapin has provided a Wiltshire school with a high speed, high quality rental solution to its temporary accommodation needs, delivering a fully-fitted modular building containing six classrooms as well as office and storage space. Terrapin completed the project in just six weeks, cutting the on- site estimate by two weeks, despite bad weather. Hardenhuish School in Chippenham is renting the building while a major project to refurbish the existing school buildings takes place - a projected 65 weeks.

Hardenhuish is a co-educational comprehensive school for pupils aged 11-18, set in the grounds of the former Hardenhuish Manor and Chippenham Grammar School. Heading up the overall refurbishment project, architecture firm A1 Planning Services Ltd put the contract for the temporary building out to tender. Terrapin’s solution a 521 sq m building using the company’s factory-fabricated Unitrex flat pack units, won the day, thanks to superior design, the predictability of off-site construction and rapid assembly time on-site. Terrapin handled all aspects of construction, including foundations, paths and steps, overcoming the challenges of a sloping site, poor weather conditions and extremely tight deadlines to deliver the building on time and to budget.

A1 Plannings Ian Rea says, “The building was finished under extremely difficult circumstances, inclement weather, and an impossible programme time - not only was it completed on time, but the quality and finish were outstanding.”

The School is equally delighted with its new temporary classroom from Terrapin. It has won universal praise from the staff and students, says Deputy Headteacher, Jan Hatherell: “Terrapin has simply confounded our previous notions of temporary buildings!”

Building off-site offers many advantages over a traditional approach, including speed of completion, cost control and reduced risk, while renting rather than outright purchase can be an attractive option, allowing schools and businesses to retain increasingly scarce capital and maximise cash flow. Terrapins rental business model also allows for the cost of dismantling and recycling or disposal of the building when it is no longer required.
