Terrapin’s off-site construction design expertise has ensured that a contemporary village school hall sits well with surrounding traditional buildings at a village near Bristol. The hall was been designed and built using Terrapin’s panel-based Unitrex system to complement the school’s existing building - a converted tithe barn - and its rural surroundings in a Green Belt area. The Unitrex ‘flat pack’ building system proved the ideal solution to the logistical challenge posed by the new hall’s position in the available space between the main building and playground. Purpose-designed factory-built floor, wall and roof panels were easily manoeuvred through the restricted access on-site, enabling a rapid build programme of just 55 days, including groundworks.
Terrapin worked closely with the architects to deliver a solution that satisfied the school’s desired aesthetics and cost objectives. Providing 180 sq m of internal space, the Terrapin hall is used by staff and pupils for a range of activities, including assemblies, indoor games, and dining - the building has a fully equipped kitchen for preparing hot food, plus washrooms and toilet facilities.
The architect says Terrapin offered a logical solution to the project’s design and construction challenges: “Terrapin addressed concerns about disturbing the original barn building, to which the new hall is joined.” Terapin’s Managing Director, “I am very pleased with the finished structure and the whole project went very smoothly, with excellent communication between the two teams throughout.”
A vaulted ceiling has enhanced the feeling of space and enabled a skylight to be built into the roof to provide additional natural light. Powered blinds have been fitted to prevent the build up of heat and glare in hot, sunny conditions. Given the heavy footfall, the floor covering in the new hall had to be hard-wearing and yet also in keeping with the interior design. Terrapin was able to supply a visually impressive herringbone wood-block floor that met both these demands.
