Terrapin completed a multi-purpose church centre for All Saints’, Oxhey, a parish of approximately 20,000, south of Watford, in the St Alban’s Diocese. This followed other similar projects; an extension to the church hall at United Reformed Church, Duston, Northampton, and a new assembly hall for Chigwell & Hainault Synagogue.
Terrapin won the contract based on a proposal using Modern Methods of Construction with both steel and timber frames, external brickwork and steel cladding to the pitched roof at a total cost of less than £500,000.
The new church is accessed via a glazed vestibule which leads to a large foyer area. This is separated from the central church hall by large, sound insulated, folding partition screens. These are also featured at the far end of the hall leading to the chapel which in turn opens to the vestry.
From either end of the foyer are corridors around the hall accessing a kitchen, toilets, stores and a number of meeting rooms used for various community activities and charitable organisations run by the church to help the young unemployed and homeless in this deprived area
The main church hall boasts a high level ceiling and clerestory lighting via a central glazed lantern roof. The cross, atop this central apex, was donated to the church by Terrapin.
